Answer a few quick questions and get a general risk read — plus what to do next.

Does the tree have any dead branches with no leaves while the rest of the tree looks normal?
Warning Signs

What to look for, any time.

Dead limbs

No leaves in season while the rest of the tree leafs out normally — a classic early sign of decline.

A new or worsening lean

Especially with soil lifting or cracking on the opposite side — that's the root system giving way, not just growth habit.

Fungus or conks

Mushroom-like growths on the trunk or exposed roots usually mean internal decay, not just surface mold.

Hollow sounds or cavities

A hollow "thock" when you knock on the trunk, or a visible cavity, can mean significant internal decay.

Bark loss or cracks

Vertical cracks or missing bark exposing bare wood — entry points for decay and pests.

Storm damage

Split branches, exposed wood, or a cracked main leader after a storm — even if the tree "looks fine" otherwise.

Pest activity

Small holes in a pattern, sawdust-like material at the base, or thinning canopy can signal a borer infestation.

Girdling roots

Roots visibly circling the trunk at the base can slowly strangle the tree over years.
